Team 16610A Receives Inaugural “Robot Intelligence Award” at VEX AI World Championship Under Coaching of Phillip
Coach Phillip, a lead mentor for Team 16610A (Level 5), played a key instructional and technical guidance role during the team’s participation at the VEX AI World Championship @ UC Berkeley.
Under his guidance, the team developed advanced robotics systems focused on autonomy, perception, and intelligent decision-making. This included structured engineering practices, sensor integration strategies, and the development of robust autonomous control systems designed for high-level competition performance.
At the VEX AI World Championship, Team 16610A demonstrated exceptional capabilities in robot autonomy, navigation, perception, and system design. Their engineering approach, including strong documentation practices and advanced control architectures, stood out among participating teams and was reviewed directly by members of the VEX Robotics engineering team.
During the event, Bob Mimitch, CTO and Co-Founder of VEX Robotics, along with members of the VEX engineering team, engaged with the team to review their technical accomplishments. Based on the level of innovation and system design demonstrated, it was recognized that this area of excellence was not fully represented within the existing award structure.
In response, the Robolabs Foundation, in partnership with VEX Robotics and the Global Robotics & Science Foundation, introduced a new award category: the Robot Intelligence Award, created to recognize teams demonstrating outstanding achievement in autonomy, perception, navigation, and intelligent robotics system design.
Team 16610A (Level 5) was selected as the inaugural recipient of this new award.
Coach Phillip’s mentorship focused on building strong engineering foundations and guiding students through real-world robotics software development practices, contributing to the team’s ability to perform at a high level in competition.
This recognition highlights the growing importance of structured autonomy systems and intelligent robotics design in the evolving VEX AI competition landscape.
